What’s your opinion on a power planer for this purpose? In particular, stripping paint or anti-mould treatment from hardwood posts or sleepers. A belt sander will do the job but create a lot of fine dust. This custom planer will avoid all the dust but it will be hard work on a big post. Seems like a power planer might be a great option for the initial stripping, to hog out fast without the fine dust?

Cambered irons on a bench plane? 🤢🤮 Belt sanders have their limitations, but Lordy if you think defiling a hand plane iron in this way is the solution you’ve got issues! 😂

How many of the 40000 table saw accidents each year are caused by kickback? I don’t know, but I would guess it’s a majority percentage. Sawstop technology, while an important development, doesn’t correct that.

I work as a firefighter, across the road is a sawmill. They have a giant RAS they use daily. We sit outside the station and when that thing is running you can hear the blade whining from 600 feet away. The way that thing rings going through the 6x6 mine timbers is awesome. But when they get a new guy running it, they tend to hog it into the timbers. Sometimes it trips a breaker, other times we hear it pull down. As it is pulling down, we hear "Blam!!" Timber hitting the steel building. That is followed by workers yelling. We look over to see dust falling off the entire building. About once a year they will walk the guy over to us with his hand smashed by the flying timber. We call an ambulance and wrap the hand. The steel roof and walls in line with the blade are full of 6x6 or larger holes.

When I was a boy growing up in the '70's I built a LOT of balsa wood airplanes. Guillows kits and lots of planes I designed myself. I inhaled so much fine balsa sawdust! Anecdotal, I know, but let me tell you, I'm over 60 and I have no problems. Early this year I won US Long Track Speed Skating National Championships in the 60-64 age class. Yeah, my dust inhalation did not prevent me from winning in an aerobic sport. I say relax.

I'd have no problem with this being mandated and I'd willingly pay extra if it didn't require consumables. The cost of a false positive is not going to be free Hopefully the other manufacturers figure out a better way or else we'll quickly see people circumventing these things, just like we do with CO sensors on generators.

I just built this but made it frameless and cut my doors to the size at the end so far it's pretty sturdy. I used some rubber door stoppers to ensure the cart doesn't roll by itself I did notice the washing machine can vibrate the doors open. I think I will try and install a magnetic catch to help that Or next time try using soft close drawer slides (those only have 100 lb weight capacity though) since they require a bit of force to open at first

What happened to the old tale that they are large particles and get caught in the upper raspatory track, I remember IBM use tell Technicians that about copier Toner dust when you went home a blew your nose and it would come out Black from toner dust. Either way it's most likely not good for you & the less you inhale the better you will be for it. Life is finite & an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I thought long and hard about what dust collection system I should use despite just being a hobbyist. The conclusion I came to is about the same as this video. No dust collection system on its own is enough. Therefore a mask is still a crucial part of safety equipment. And since I'm not making my living off woodworking I can just work on projects for short periods of time and ventilate the room in the interim. As with anything it's a good idea to take breaks as frequently as possible.

My Dad had to retire being a cabinet maker in his midlife years, due to wood alergies specficially pine and blackwood this would cause him to have severe asthma atacks or his skin to flair up. He often would turn on his Water filtered spray booth, and exhaust fans. He had large dust collectors on all his machines. We put it down more to Partical board and MDF and the glues at the time. But Masks are super important and most likely his no1 contribution to his problem as he often was under the pump and forget to put on a mask. I often blew the dust off my 3M masks every half an hour or so depending if I was sanding, cleaning etc.

Yeah, at my old job the ancient table saw they had broke down, just as saw stop came out. We forced our boss to get a saw stop table saw, cue many complaints about cost and excess. Then he used it and he was in awe at how nice it was. Three years later after I had moved on he calks me up and takes me to a nice restaurant for dinner, the saw had saved his hand during a moment of inatention.
